Who We Are

Our Mission

The church family engaging each person to enrich our community for God's Glory through Jesus through:

  • Evangelism: We create congregational and individual opportunities for the community to meet Jesus Christ
The Great Commission – Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." - Matthew 28:16-20

  • Worship: We glorify and honor God’s majesty and worth in a variety of worship styles and settings
And they shall sing of the ways of the Lord, for great is the glory of the Lord. - Psalm 138:5

  • Fellowship: We enfold one another fully into a caring, Christ-like, Spirit-led fellowship
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. - 1 John 3:16

  • Discipleship: We encourage each other to grow in faith, knowledge and love for God and others and follow Jesus in our daily walk
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. - Acts 2:42
  • Mission and Outreach: We empower participants to give themselves away for Jesus in the church, community and world
Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work. - 2 Timothy 2:21

What We Believe

The Scriptures

The Bible is the special revelation of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, in order that people might come into the knowledge and love of God. The words of the Bible were written in various literary fashions, by imperfect people of different cultures and languages. Therefore, we at First Pres Maumee utilize all the resources of scholarship in order to interpret the meaning of God’s Word for the church today. We believe that the Bible is trustworthy and absolutely reliable.

The Trinity

God is three yet one, taking the form of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Scripture teaches that “God is love;” therefore, we understand love to be the defining characteristic of the Trinity. In love, God creates, redeems, and sustains. In love, God the Father created all that is, has been, and ever will be. In love, God the Son became incarnate, died on the cross, and rose again for our salvation. In love, God the Spirit resides in the heart of God’s people and empowers us to live the Christian life.

About Salvation

We are broken and rebellious, in desperate need of a Savior. Mercifully, God offers us salvation, which is the reunion of people with their Creator through Christ Jesus. Crucified on a cross, Jesus offered himself as our substitute, bearing the penalty of death for our sin. Rising from the grave, Christ conquered death, offering the promise of eternal life and establishing God’s Kingdom on earth. Salvation cannot be earned, only received as a gift by choosing to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

About Sanctification

Having received this gift of salvation, the Holy Spirit enters into our lives declaring us holy and righteous in God’s sight. The Holy Spirit kindles within us the desire to follow Jesus and uses us to build God’s Kingdom. As we wait for the return of Jesus our king, we seek to become more like him.

The Sacraments

The Sacraments are holy ordinances given by Christ to his church as visible signs of God’s love and grace. They are means by which Christ remains present with his people until his return. Jesus instituted the observance of two sacraments, Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Baptism is the sign of the New Covenant instituted by Christ, symbolizing his washing away of our sin. In the midst of worship, baptism celebrates a person’s joyful entrance into the community of faith. In the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, bread and juice are offered as a way to remember the sacrificial love of God, and they become for us a means of grace and the presence of Christ. All persons who are followers of Jesus Christ are invited to receive the Lord’s Supper.

The Church

The Church universal is the body of Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit and made up of God’s followers from every “tribe, tongue and nation.” Jesus is Lord and head of the church and the church is committed to following His will. The great mission of the church is to make disciples of all nations. As a part of Christ’s church since 1820, our congregation’s primary purpose has been to live as a testimony of God’s love to our community and world. Each member of our church is endowed by the Holy Spirit with gifts of ministry and is responsible to steward those gifts for the benefit of all.

Initiatives

Mentoring

As part of our 12:31 Ministries, the Mentoring Initiative strives to get out into the community to enrich students’ success in school and life. Specifically, we are strategically investing in Wayne Trail Elementary School, a public school which is only 1.2 miles away from our church. Some of our on-going projects include:

  • Read and Relate – For the past two school years, volunteers from the church work one-on-one with a 4th or 5th grade student during their lunch hour to read with them on a weekly basis. Reading skills are improved and relationships are built. Every August, First Pres Maumee recruits more volunteers to participate in this valuable program.

  • Support of Teachers – Before the beginning of the school year, volunteers from the church help set up classrooms. Last summer, we also offered to provide the school’s 23 teachers gift cards at Barnes & Noble and the Andersons so that they could purchase additional school supplies.

  • Support of Administration – If there is a need, we want to be known by the administration of Wayne Trail as a resource and a help. The principal has been contacting us and alerting us of needs on an ongoing basis. As a result, we made it possible for one 5th-grade student to go to camp by providing him with a scholarship. We have also been able to be present in conversations about suicide prevention and drug abuse prevention.

  • A new project we are working on is Before School Support. Many parents in our community have to start work before 9:10 am, when school begins. To offset the costs of childcare, we would like to have volunteers from the church available to be present in the cafeteria from 8 to 9 am each weekday morning, so that relationships can be formed and we can care for working parents/guardians and relieve some of their burden. Let us know if you would like to participate in some way!
Marriage and Family

As part of our 12:31 Ministries, the Marriage and Family Initiative seeks to be a strong advocate for healthy marriages and supporting children and parents in every household. Demographically, there are 4,400 households of one-parent families in the 5 miles surrounding First Pres Maumee, and we hope to encourage and strengthen these families who face unique and challenging circumstances. Some of the ways we are exercising this ministry include:

  • Marriage Mentoring Ministry – Pastor Clint quips, “We don’t do weddings, but we love to start marriages!” We believe that preparation for marriage should be at least as large of an investment as planning for a wedding ceremony. To this end, we intentionally welcome couples to join a premarital process that involves group counseling from a pastor, mentoring from a couple that has been married for 25+ years, and encouragement from the whole church family during their engagement.

  • Baby University – We believe that Jesus is inviting us to participate in fulfilling his promise of bringing good news to the poor. Poverty is a devastating reality in the Toledo area. Children from low-income neighborhoods enter Kindergarten 60 percent behind their middle-class counterparts in learning development. Therefore, volunteers from First Pres Maumee help facilitate Baby University at Mosaic Ministries, which is a program that seeks to give parents tools to close the education gap. Our goal is that children in the South Toledo Kids’ Zone are ready to learn when they start school.

  • “Wyldlife” – Young Life and First Pres Maumee partner to offer this ministry immediately after school at Gateway Middle School. This weekly group provides a safe place for middle school students to engage in spiritual conversation and exploration. Staff from First Pres Maumee and Young Life work hard to ensure that students come to know Christ’s love for them more and more.

  • GriefShare & DivorceCare – These nationally recognized ministries give us an opportunity to help people in the Maumee community who are enduring significant grief and pain. Both of these ministries run concurrently for 13 weeks. A cycle is usually offered both in the spring and the fall on Tuesday evenings. Members of our church family provide a meal before the program as an expression of love and care for those in pain.

Beautiful Noise

As part of our 12:31 Ministries, the Beautiful Noise Initiative strives to establish and grow collaborative music programs that inspire both our church and community. Some of our on-going ministries include:

  • Maumee School System Instrument Bank - We collect gently used donated musical instruments, have them refurbished and donate them to the Maumee school system for children who otherwise would be unable to participate in band.

  • Maumee Wayne Trail School Music Teachers Support Program - Several musically talented church members assist the Wayne Trail music teachers in their classroom. We also loan our Orff Instruments (xylophones) to the school during the fall semester.

  • First Wednesday Summer Concert Series - We offer a free concert series the first Wednesdays on June, July, and August on the front lawn.

  • A new initiative we are working on is Free Musical Instrument Lessons. Let us know if you would like to participate in some way as we promote music education, access, and appreciation throughout our community!
